Part II and Part III are more practical in nature, offering concrete examples of how we integrated digital formative assessment in our teaching and the lessons we’ve learned. Part I gives the relevant background, including a brief overview of the theoretical underpinnings and key concepts, as well as some information about the courses in which this project was implemented. The Guide is divided into three major parts. We invite higher education instructors to reflect on aspects that might be useful in their own educational context, and modify and incorporate these in their own teaching. We believe that the experiences we have gained might be valuable for a broad range of higher education courses, though the recommendations are most suitable for courses that have fewer than 50 students. Our purpose in writing this Guide is to share the lessons we have learned throughout this process and thereby assist higher education professionals in implementing digital formative assessment in their courses. It is important to stress that using this digital tool was a way of supporting formative assessment, rather than a goal in itself. The digital tool we used was OneNote Class Notebook. Our aim in the project was to explore ways in which formative assessment can be enhanced in the courses we were teaching, and at the same time exploit the possibilities that the use of digital technology makes available. The project was funded by the Norwegian Agency for International Cooperation and Quality Enhancement in Higher Education, and the participating institutions. The recommendations in this Guide are based on the experiences we have gathered from a two-year project that focused on implementing digital formative assessment in higher education courses at two teacher education institutions in Norway.
